How Institute Roles and Permissions Work
Understand owners, administrators, teachers, and students, and what each role can do in Institute Studio.
How Institute Roles and Permissions Work
Institute Studio uses a small set of roles. Each member of your institute has exactly one role per institute, and the role decides what they can see and do.
The Roles
Role Typical use What it can do --- --- --- Owner The person who created the institute Everything, including adding administrators and transferring ownership. There is always at least one owner. Administrator Office staff, coordinators Manage members, groups, book licences, and institute settings. Cannot remove the last owner. Teacher Teaching staff See assigned groups and students, and assign books when allowed. No access to institute settings. Student Learners Only their own books, progress, and results. No access to Institute Studio.
Permissions Behind the Roles
Roles are built from named permissions. The main ones are:
- members.view — see the people list and dashboard. - members.manage — add, invite, and remove members; manage groups. - roles.manage — create custom roles and change what they can do. - institute.settings.manage — edit the institute profile, address, and links from the dashboard. - website.edit / website.publish — manage the public institute page.
The owner role holds all permissions. Administrators hold the management permissions above. You can create custom roles with a narrower set.
Who Can Change What
1. Only an owner can add or remove administrators .
2. An administrator can add or remove teachers and students .
3. A member can always leave an institute themselves, unless they are the last owner.
